The Tradition of Christmas Trees

The Christmas Tree is probably the most potent of the many Christmas symbols. Long before Christianity, dating back some 5,000 years to early Celtic tradition the evergreen symbolises immortality, the continuity of life. Its one of the few plants to remain green all year, a symbol of life in a season of death.

According to legend the tree was chopped and brought into the home at the winter solstice, the shortest day of the year to provide shelter for faeries where they could remain warm for the winter.

From about 1600AD come the first references to Christmas trees at Yule time in Christianity. In Strastbourg, Germany (now a part of France), families both rich and poor decorated fir trees with coloured paper, fruits and sweets. The tradition spread througout Europe and soon gifts were being added. A Star or Angel was placed atop the tree signifying the Star of David and the Angels.

Today beneath the tree is the destination for Santa Claus' presents. Trees are decorated with magnificent lights, tinsel and exotic decorations. The Christmas tree is probably the most popular symbol of Christmas spanning from the workplace, to the street, to the family home, to be appreciated and enjoyed by all.
