Irish hotel prices fall 4% in 2010
Hotel prices in Ireland continued to feel the effects of the economic downturn, with average prices per room per night, falling by 4%. The average price of an Irish hotel room per night in 2010 was €79 compared to €82 in 2009

Dublin ready for Tall Ships invasion
Dublin City is set to welcome back the International Tall Ships Races next year. Last seen in Dublin in 1998, the city is to be the final host port for the 2012 Tall Ship Races. The event will see up to 100 Tall Ships sail into Dublin for a four day festival and celebration, from Thursday the 23 August to Sunday 26 August, 2012. Ships from as far away as Chile, Mexico, Argentina, USA and European and Baltic countries including Italy and Norway will chart their course to Dublin.

Major cruise ships plan to make Galway a regular stop
Some of the biggest cruise liner companies in the world – which carry hundreds of thousands of passengers each year – want to include the planned new Galway Port on their travel itinerary. In fact, a spokesperson for the Galway Harbour Company who spoke with liner representatives said: “They all want to come to Galway”. And at a cruise ship convention in Florida last week, representatives of ‘The World’ – the biggest residential cruise ship on the seas – expressed strong interest in docking here.

New Ships for Northern Ireland - Scotland Route
Ferry company brings in two of the biggest ships ever to work the Northern Ireland – Scotland route. Leading ferry company Stena Line today confirmed the addition of two new Superfast ferries on its service between Northern Ireland and Scotland in Autumn 2011 to coincide with the opening of its new £80m Loch Ryan Port at Cairnryan.

Almost 1.2 Million Passengers Travel Through Dublin Airport In February
Passenger throughput at Dublin Airport was close to 1.2 million for the month of February, a 3% decline over the same period last year, according to the Dublin Airport Authority. Passenger volumes to and from continental Europe fell by 2% with just over 578,000 passengers travelling to European destinations. UK traffic recorded a decrease of 4% with almost 513,000 passengers travelling in February.

West Corridor passenger numbers disappointing
While it had been anticipated that 100,000 railway trips per year would be taken on the first phase of the Western Corridor from Ennis to Athenry, Department of Transport figures reveal that the numbers between May and September of last year averaged 4,800. This figure further reduced between from October and December to a monthly average of 4,330. This should result in between 50,000 and 60,000 people using the service annually.

Meringue Nests With Summer Fruits
Serves 6
Ingredients
  • 6 medium meringue nests
  • 300ml fresh cream, whipped
  • 125g strawberries
  • 125g raspberries
  • 125g125g red currants

    Directions:
    Wash the fruit very gently and leave dry on kitchen paper.
    Slice the strawberries.
    Divide the whipped cream between the 6 meringues, then add the fruit and serve.
